Greek and Roman athletes favored Dragon’s Bloodstone as a talisman for success in their games and competitions. A Christian tradition states that the red spots come from blood falling upon the stone during the crucifixion of Jesus, as he was stabbed in the side by a roman soldier. Ancient Roman soldiers believed that the stone had the ability to slow bleeding and wore it for this reason. In India it is held that one can staunch bleeding by placing the stone upon wounds and injuries after dipping in cold water. Dragon’s Bloodstone was also called the “Stone of Babylon” by Albertus Magnus. Pliny the Elder (1st century) mentioned first that magicians use it as a stone of invisibility. For this, the stone is smeared with fresh Heliotrope flowers and worn or carried to prevent attracting attention to yourself. In the 13th century, Bloodstones engraved with the image of a bat were worn to boost the magical power of spells and rites. The gemstone is also believed to preserve health and youth. The Gnostics wore the stone as an amulet for longevity. Damigeron (4th century) wrote about the crystal’s ability to make rain and solar eclipse. Dragon’s Bloodstone was also used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to bring renown and favor, to bring endurance, and as a charm against the bites and stings of venomous creatures. Bloodstone is worn on a woman’s arm to prevent miscarriage and attached to the thigh to ease childbirth. Description:  Dragon’s Bloodstone is the mineral aggregate Heliotrope, the name of which in Ancient Greek translates to mean “to turn the sun”. Also known as Dragon’s Blood Jasper, the gemstone is a cryptocrystalline mixture of Quartz that occurs mostly as Jasper or sometimes as Chalcedony. The classic Bloodstone is opaque Green Jasper with red inclusions of Hematite. The red inclusions resemble spots of blood, hence the name Bloodstone. Dragon’s Bloodstone has been found in Western Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Italy, Nova Scotia, and numerous locations in the United States. There are also occurrences of Bloodstone on the Isle of Rum, in Scotland. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Dragon Bloodstone when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a red candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours.
