Burdock leaf is one of the best all-around treatments for problems with bacterial or fungal infections. It has been used in China and Japan for many years to treat colds and flus. It has also been used to treat problems with kidneys. Burdock leaf has three major benefits: it is an antibacterial agent, an antifungal agent, and it works as a diuretic. Burdock leaf can be used topically to treat minor skin problems such as bruises and scrapes. It can help speed the healing of burns and prevent infection. Burdock leaves have also been used topically on the skin to help treat acne, skin breakouts, poison ivy, poison oak, athlete’s foot, skin irritations like eczema and psoriasis, tumors on the skin, and even gout. Burdock leaves can be used as a poultice or made into a salve for irritated skin. Also said to be helpful with fever when laid across the forehead. Burdock root is edible, and mostly used as a blood purifier. Burdock Root is used as an infusion (tea), a tincture, and in capsules. Burdock is one of the foremost detoxifying herbs in both Chinese and Western herbal medicine. Supplementation with Burdock root has shown positive effects in the treatment of acne especially of inflammatory type. Burdock has been used as an alterative to enhance detoxification pathways in the liver and increase cellular metabolism as a whole, and is thus used in conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, and as a tonic towards the digestive system. It is also considered a glandular alterative, is indicated in chronic glandular enlargements. The Japanese traditionally used burdock root for constipation, syphilis, mercury poisoning, paralysis, to stimulate blood circulation, and as a diaphoretic. The oil from Burdock seeds has been shown to have anti-aging properties in skin care. It can be used in potions, ritual baths, incense, and amulets. Also used for general healing. The root can be carved into a figure, dried and carried or worn as a protective amulet. Burdock is used for cleansing magic when feeling highly negative about oneself or others. Rinse with a decoction of burdock to remove negative feelings about yourself or others. An amulet can be made from the root, or the leaves can be used as part of incense and spread around the house to ward off negativity. It’s possible it could be used as part of a smudge stick, or perhaps an infusion of burdock leaves used instead of salted water in protection rituals. The leaves can also be used in water related incense, and in any spells or incenses related to Venus. A string of Burdock beads or dried cut root can be threaded on red string (this is an old folk belief of the old “rowan berries and red thread” type) and worn for protection against evil and negativity. Burdock is used for healing. The leaves, when laid to the soles of the feet, help cure gout. The root needs to be gathered in the waning moon because this draws the plant’s energy and power downwards into the roots and concentrates it there. Because burdock is associated with Venus, it also has associations with love, and the burrs can be used in love charms. Charms used to be cast with the burrs, to determine whether or not a lover was true. The burr would be thrown at the skirt, and if it stuck then the lover was true, but if it fell off then they weren’t. Mystical Intentions: ward off negativity, banish negativity, protection spells, healing spells, general protection, build self-esteem, positive self-image, self-worth, smudge, Venus spells, love spells, true love Other Uses: Has long been used as a food in European and Asian cuisines. You can use burdock leaf in the form of a tea, powder, capsule, or tincture. You can also find burdock in lotions and creams that are used for the skin. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Burdock is a member of the daisy and sunflower family (Asteraceae). Burdock is native to the temperate regions of the old world, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, and from the British Isles through Russia, and the Middle East to China and Japan, including India. Burdock is rather tall. First year Burdock plants have large leaves that resemble Elephant ears but lay prostrate on the ground (basal leaves in a rosette). Do not confuse with Rhubarb, whose leaves are poisonous. In the second year, Burdock sends up a stout and erect, grooved, rough stem with multiple branches growing 2-6 feet tall, reaching as much as 9 feet (2.7 m). The leaves are alternate, dark green, smooth above, whitish green, and woolly-hairy beneath. It boasts round pink and white or purple flowers in early summer, then ripens into prickly balls up to an inch in diameter. The head is enclosed in a prickly bur composed of numerous smooth or woolly bracts tipped with hooked spines, flowering July to October. The fleshy tap-root can grow up to 3 feet (0.91 m) deep. Burdock prefers locations with full sun, usually found on the roadside and in undisturbed areas. It prefers nitrogen-rich soil that is rich in humus and organic matter. Sow Burdock seeds in your garden as early as the ground can be worked. Cover seeds with 1/2″ to 3/4″ of fine garden or seed starting soil. Tamp soil. Water lightly if the soil is dry. Seedlings germinate quickly, in about 4-7 days. Pick leaves and tender young stems for eating fresh. Harvest three to four months after the seeding until late autumn, when the roots become too fibrous. Dry the leaves and cut into smaller pieces for storage. The root can be dried, then cut into pieces or powdered. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Because burdock works as a diuretic, it should be avoided if you have problems with diarrhea as it can cause you to become dehydrated. Potential adverse reactions include dermatitis from topical use, and allergic sensitivity to Asteraceae family. Use caution in history of bleeding disorder, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, hypoglycemia, pregnancy & lactation, and in diabetes as may precipitate decrease in blood sugar. Increases gut motility, thus may theoretically decrease absorption of medications taken simultaneously. May potentiate aspirin or anticoagulants due to antiplatelet activity (theoretical). Potential additive effects with anti-diabetic agents and diuretics. May increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
