The name Dragon’s Blood comes from the distinct fiery red color of this resin when it burns. Dragon’s Blood Resin comes from a Draco type palm tree. A great degree of confusion existed for the ancients in regard to the source and identity of dragon’s blood. Some medieval encyclopedias claimed its source as the literal blood of elephants and dragons who had perished in mortal combat. The red resin of Dragon’s Blood was used in ancient times as varnish, medicine, incense, and dye. Locals on Socotra island use the Dracaena resin as a sort of cure-all, using it for such things as general wound healing, a coagulant, curing diarrhea, lowering fevers, dysentery diseases, taken internally for ulcers in the mouth, throat, intestines and stomach, as well as an antiviral for respiratory viruses, stomach viruses and for skin disorders such as eczema. It was also used in medieval ritual magic and alchemy. Dragon’s Blood is one of the renowned traditional medicines used in different cultures of the world. Traditionally, Dragon’s Blood has been used externally as a wash to promote healing of wounds and sores, and to stop bleeding. It has been used internally for chest pain, post-partum bleeding, internal traumas, and menstrual irregularities (*CAUTION: THIS DRAGON’S BLOOD IS NOT FOR INTERNAL USE!) One compound found in Dragon’s Blood is Taspine, which is said to reduce inflammation. Dragon’s Blood is also added to many skin care creams due to its anti-aging benefits, and the belief that it helps reduce redness and swelling, and sooths skin issues such as inflammation, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and rosacea. Historical Uses: antiviral, wound healing, inflammation, anti-aging, stopping bleeding, haemostatic, diarrhea, ulcer, antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea, dry and irritated skin, skin ulcers, sores, bedsores Mystical Attributes: Dragon’s Blood can be used to bring about protection, healing, power, banishing, and good fortune. It is used in many religions and rituals. The dried resin is a powerful protectant when carried, sprinkled around the house or smoldered as incense. The incense will drive away evil and negativity when burned. Burn the incense or sprinkle the powder around the perimeter to banish negativity. When mixed with other incense, it boosts their power and potency. Blend it with dried sage or sweetgrass for extra protection. It is also burned as incense for cleansing and exorcism, especially to rid a new space of energies of former occupants (camphor increases its effectiveness in this case). When burned on the charcoal, it looks like boiling blood. It is as such often used a blood substitute in spells and rituals. Dragon’s Blood is used in healing spells involving bleeding. Dragon’s Blood can be burned during spells to increase courage and protect those going into a dangerous situation. Hindu Priests considered it to be an offering to the gods, whereas the Native Americans would burn it to create smoke that could summon the spirits of their ancestors. In American Hoodoo, African-American folk magic, New Orleans voodoo, it is used in mojo hands (mojo bags, gris gris), for drawing money and attracting love. Dragon’s Blood powder has been used by women who wish to receive an offer of marriage. Write your lover’s name on a small square of brown paper, cross it with your own name, fold Dragon’s Blood powder into the paper, and throw the packet onto a glowing charcoal, along with other love incense, while saying your prayer for an engagement. Magic Red Ink made with Dragon’s Blood is used to write intentions, to inscribe magical seals, to write the name of a target, to draw other symbols, and to inscribe talismans. Add lodestone into Dragon’s Blood oil to create a money drawing oil. Dragon’s Blood Resin is burned to entice errant lovers to return. This is usually done while seated near an open window, looking outside at night. Mix Dragon’s Blood with cinnamon and pieces of rose quartz to create a love potion. To quiet a noisy house, mix Dragon’s Blood with sugar and salt, and place in a bottle. Cover the bottle tightly and secure it somewhere in your house where it won’t be found. You’ll have peace and quiet. For purification and to ward off negative energy, add hematite or onyx, along with rosemary or sage, and use it to anoint your doors and windows.
