Although this herb is better known as Siberian Ginseng, use of the word “ginseng” in the U.S. is now limited to the Panax genus so the term is no longer accurate (or legal for marketing purposes). The root of the plant has been used for centuries in Asia to produce restorative teas and tonics. In addition to flavonoids, vitamins and minerals, Eleuthero Root contains a variety of polysaccharides and specific compounds called eleutherosides. A famous Chinese doctor once said, “I would rather take a handful of Eleuthero than a carload of gold and jewels.” Eleuthero is actually considered stronger than Panax Ginseng for anti-fatigue and anti-stress properties. Eleuthero is an adrenal adaptogen and increases mental alertness and clarity, focus, and physical endurance. It is a great supplement for students and creatives. It inhibits hypertrophy of adrenal and thyroid glands by reducing the extent of the fight or flight reaction and reduces the exhaustive effects of long-term chronic stress and stress-related fatigue. Russian astronauts used Eleuthero Root to enhance physical and mental performance. Soviet athletes have used it to boost stamina and endurance. It is known to stimulate the adrenals and sex hormone production (gonadotrophic properties), historically being used to help increase male fertility. Eleuthero has been used for chronic viral infections and chronic illness, prevention of infections, cancer prevention, adjuvant cancer therapy, and reduction of damage from heavy metal and pesticide toxicity. Historical Uses:  adaptogen, tonic, antioxidant, chemoprotective, immune-modulator, stimulant, hypertensive, cardiotonic, hypoglycemic, circulatory stimulant, anti-coagulant, bitter, mental alertness, mental ability, mental clarity, focus, physical endurance, stamina, athletic performance, physical strength, thyroid problems, stress, stress-related exhaustion, fatigue, anti-viral, anti-cancer, immune-boosting, male infertility Mystical Attributes:   Eleuthero Root is helpful for mental clarity and focus, motivation, and overcoming obstacles (resilience). Eleuthero Root is sometimes used to protect against evil spirits, and has been traditionally hung over doorways and burned as incense in purification rituals in Russia. Eleuthero is believed to protect from accidents and provide protection while traveling. It has been used as a symbol of male fertility and in love charms. In Japan, Eleuthero Root has been used to invoke the protection and blessings of the goddess Amaterasu. Mystical Intentions:  health and healing, mental ability, energy, vitality, courage, confidence, motivation, success in competition, overcoming obstacles, resilience, boosting magical power, protection from evil spirits, purification, protection from accidents, protection while traveling, calm, fertility Taste & Smell:  Pungent, slightly bitter, and warming. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Eleutherococcus senticosus is a small, woody shrub in the Araliaceae family. It grows 3 – 10 feet high. Eleuthero is native to Siberia, northern China, Japan and Korea, now naturalized in northwestern U.S. and British Columbia. Its leaves are attached to a main stem by long branches. Both the branches and the stem are covered with thorns. Flowers, yellow or violet, grow in umbrella-shaped clusters, and turn into round, black berries in late summer. The root itself is woody and is brownish, wrinkled, and twisted. Eleuthero grows in mixed and coniferous mountain forests, forming low undergrowth or is found in groups in thickets and edges. It is sometimes found in oak groves at the foot of cliffs, very rarely in high forest riparian woodland. It can tolerate sun or dappled shade. Eleuthero is adaptable to many soils, growing in sandy, loamy, and heavy clay soils with acid, neutral, or alkaline chemistry and including poor soils. Sow seeds as soon as they are ripe in the autumn in a cold frame. Seeds can be slow to germinate. Stored seed requires 6 months warm followed by 3 months cold. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame or greenhouse for at least the first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. This plant may also be propagated by cuttings or division. The roots are harvested in the autumn, cut and dried for later use. Dried root may also be ground in powder. To harvest Echinacea roots, lift the plant and tip it back using a garden fork. Use a very sharp knife and clean-cut the portions of root that you want to harvest. Be sure to leave enough roots to sustain the plant. A good rule of thumb is to harvest about 20% of root if you intend to make annual harvests. Dry the roots (cut into small pieces) and leaves. Store dried root pieces or powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Best to avoid in children and those that are nervous, tense, manic or overly energetic. High doses may cause palpitations, insomnia, hypertension and tachycardia. Avoid use with stimulants, alcohol, barbiturates, anti-psychotics, digoxin, and anticoagulants.   Constituents: Eleutherosides (glycosides) including eleutherosides B and E Syringin Phenylpropanes Polysaccharide Phenolic compounds Triterpenoid saponins Lignans Coumarins Volatile oils   Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
