Granulated and powdered garlic affords flavor with a reduced “bite” and a long shelf life without refrigeration. Garlic is one of the most commonly used herbs around. It adds delicious flavor to many sauces, stir-fry, and just about any dish. Many people even eat it raw. It also happens to have many uses that make it perfect for improving your overall health. Garlic and garlic essential oil can also be used externally to repel mosquitoes and ticks. Garlic sprays help naturally repel bugs. Historical use of Garlic is recorded by many physicians and herbalists of the ancient world. It was recommended as an antiseptic, an antidote for poisonous bites, as a cough suppressant, and to expel intestinal parasites. Garlic has been esteemed for its healing powers, and before the development of antibiotics was a treatment for infections, from tuberculosis to typhoid.  It was used to dress wounds in World War I. It was also considered a good carminative for digestive problems and excellent for diarrhea, especially when due to infectious causes, bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Due to garlic’s sulfur compounds that may help the immune system fight infection, to avoid getting sick during cold and flu seasons, some crush a few cloves of garlic and wear them in their socks. It may even improve symptoms of respiratory conditions like bronchitis and asthma. Because of its natural antifungal and antimicrobial properties, garlic has been used throughout history for skin infections and even athlete’s foot. One study found that subjects who used a mild garlic solution on their athlete’s foot had a 100% success rate, compared to 94% that used over-the-counter ointment. Some have historically crushed four or five cloves of garlic and rubbed them on the affected area of the feet twice per day. Feet can also be soaked in garlic water. Garlic and garlic essential oil may also help infections like ringworm, tinea versicolor, parasites, and warts. Garlic and garlic oil are also common home remedies to relieve the pain of earaches and ear infections caused by bacteria or fungus. But garlic in the ear may cause painful skin reactions, so should be used with caution. Garlic also has cleansing properties. Placing a freshly crushed garlic clove in the toilet before going to bed can help clean it, reduce the need for constant cleaning, reducing the buildup of bacteria and fungi, and rid the toilet of bad smells. Historical Uses:  insect repellant, insect bites and stings, snake bites, antiseptic, cough, intestinal parasitic infection, infection, cold, flu, respiratory infection, bronchitis, tuberculosis, typhoid, earache, ear infection, abrasions, cuts, grazes, scrapes, wounds, indigestion, diarrhea, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, skin infection, athlete’s foot, ringworm, parasitic skin infection, tinea versicolor, warts Mystical Attributes:  Garlic’s image has been found in Egyptian tombs depicted as an offering to the Gods. The pyramid builders of ancient Egypt were paid partially in garlic and Egyptians swore oaths on cloves of garlic. Roman soldiers ate garlic before battle for strength and bravery. A clove of garlic can be added to any mojo bag to strengthen its energy. Garlic was used to maintain health during the plague, and is still used to absorb and protect from diseases. Rub fresh, peeled cloves of garlic onto the afflicted part of the body, then throw into running water. For protection from hepatitis, wear thirteen cloves of garlic at the end of a cord around the neck for thirteen days. On the last day, in the middle of the night, walk to a corner of an intersection of two streets, remove the necklace, throw it behind you, and run home without looking back. Garlic is used to ward off evil spirits, vampires, monsters, the evil eye and various spells and hexes. It shields you from attacks from your enemies. When evil spirits are about, bite into garlic to send them away, or sprinkle powdered garlic on the floor. Garlic is used in exorcisms. Wiping a knife with garlic juice empowers it against negative energies. When worn, garlic guards against foul weather (mountaineers wear it). Sailors carry garlic to protect against shipwrecks. Garlic is also placed beneath children’s pillows to protect them while asleep. Brides once carried a clove of garlic in her pocket for good luck and to keep evil far from her big day. An Islamic legend claims that when Satan left the Garden of Eden, garlic and onions grew from his footprints. Garlic cloves are used, with other things, to stuff poppets intended for negative magic. Garlic is sacred to Hecate and is a suitable offering to her left at a crossroads. Garlic was eaten on festival days to Hecate. To send away an unwanted lover, place a clove of garlic intersected with two crossed pins where he is sure to walk. When he walks over it, he will lose interest. To gain someone’s undying love, the target of your affections must drink a potion made of a strand of the target’s hair, threads from his or her clothing, alcohol and garlic. Hanging garlic over a bedroom door will draw lovers into it. Garlic is said to have aphrodisiac powers and induce lust when eaten. Garlic braids hung over the door repels thieves and envious people as well as brings good luck. Change the braid every year. It is especially protective in new homes. When a magnet or lodestone is rubbed with garlic, it loses its magical powers. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Garlic is native to central Asia, and has long been a staple in the Mediterranean region, as well as in Asia, Africa, and Europe. It is a bulbous plant. The leaves are long, narrow and flat like grass. The bulb (the only part eaten) is of a compound nature, consisting of numerous bulblets, known technically as “cloves,” grouped together between the membranous scales and enclosed within a whitish skin, which holds them as in a sac. The flowers are placed at the end of a stalk rising direct from the bulb and are whitish, grouped together in a globular head, or umbel, with an enclosing kind of leaf or spathe, and among them are small bulbils. Garlic prefers sunny locations. It does well in loose, dry, well drained soils. Garlic plants prefer to grow in a soil with a high organic material content, but are capable of growing in a wide range of soil conditions. Garlic is easy to grow and can be grown year-round in mild climates by planting individual cloves in the ground. In cold climates, cloves are planted in the autumn, about six weeks before the soil freezes, and harvested in late spring. When planted early in the spring, in February or March, the bulbs should be ready for lifting in August, when the leaves will be beginning to wither. If the summer is wet and cold, they may not be ready until nearly the middle of September. Use garlic cloves fresh, dried and cut into pieces, or powdered. Store dried garlic (pieces or powdered) in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Can cause irritation to the gastric mucosa (especially fresh bulb). Avoid in acute stomach inflammation, acid reflux or irritation of mucosal surfaces. High amounts can cause breath & body odor. Do not use within 10 days of surgery or with medications that inhibit blood coagulation. Avoid excessive use in early pregnancy due to potential emmenagogue effects. Avoid use with hypothyroidism as it may cause reduced iodine uptake by the thyroid. May cause hypersensitivity or allergic reaction. May potentiate insulin (inhibits its breakdown) and hypoglycemic drugs. May potentiate anticoagulants and increase bleeding time (eg. Aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin) due to antiplatelet activity. May enhance effects of cholesterol-lowering agents. May decrease drug level of HIV protease inhibitors.   Constituents:  Volatile oil (sulfur containing compounds): sulfoxides (ajoene, alliin, allicin) & thiocyanates Enzymes (allinase) Carbohydrates, lipids & amino acids Lectins (lectin-allinase complexes)     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
