Called “allspice” because it incorporates flavors such as clove, cinnamon, and pepper, it is a common flavoring for spice cookies. The sweet yet spicy aroma is released when the dried berry is crushed. It has also been used throughout history to preserve meats, specifically wild pig. Studies have shown that allspice extract binds to estrogen receptors. As such, it may trick your body into believing that its estrogen levels are up, thus helping symptoms of menopause. The eugenol and ericifolin in allspice may provide antimicrobial and antifungal effects. Research on essential oils extracted from allspice berries shows antifungal properties against Candida albicans, a yeast that’s resistant to certain antifungal drugs. The essential oil also shows antibacterial properties against E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, S. aureus, and Salmonella. Allspice has been used as a home remedy for headaches, muscle cramps, and tooth pain. It contains eugenol (an analgesic, or pain relief agent), which is commonly used in dentistry. The essential oil may also help alleviate muscle pain and strains by promoting circulation. Allspice may also help reduce inflammation. Research has shown that allspice extract may activate Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5, a protein responsible for the secretion of hunger-reducing hormones glucagon-like peptide 1 and peptide YY. These hormones help reduce your appetite by increasing feelings of fullness. The eugenol in allspice may also help relieve indigestion, gas, and bloating by stimulating digestive enzymes and inhibiting H. pylori, the bacteria responsible for indigestion and associated with stomach ulcers. The eugenol in allspice may even help protect pancreatic islets (the cells responsible for insulin production) and improve their function, thus helping manage blood sugar levels and early stages of type 2 diabetes. The plant grows best in areas that get light for about 40% of the day. The saplings require more light. Allspice trees are propagated most successfully from seed. The seeds need to be planted immediately upon gathering as they quickly become infertile when exposed to the elements and they die in only two months. Transplantable seedlings should sprout within about six months. Plant in loose well-moistened soil. Add tropical plant fertilizer every three to five weeks. Water thoroughly any time the soil’s surface seems dry. Grown outdoors, the plant can reach over 40 feet high. The trees should be planted with thirty feet on each side to allow room to expand and for roots to stretch underground. Plant both male and female trees in the general area to encourage cross-pollination. Prune the trees back in the spring and summer. At about three years or older, the trees will begin to bear fruit and small fragrant blooms from June to August. Berries appear shortly after flowers bloom. The flowers turn into small purple and black berries. Harvest when the berries reach a full mature size but are still green and unripe. Each berry may contain one or two seeds. Lay the harvested berries in the sun to dry. When dried, you will be able to hear the seeds rattling inside. When the berries have dried to a dark red-brown, remove them from the sunlight. Store in an air-tight container, in a cool and dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Allspice is not generally associated with toxicity, but eugenol can be toxic in high concentrations. Ingestion of extracts may produce toxicity and affect the central nervous system. Older research has suggested that people with hand dermatitis may develop allergic reactions when cooking with allspice. Large quantities of allspice may trigger gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea or vomiting. Avoid using large amounts of allspice if taking blood clotting medication.
